DDNet: cooperative platforming that asks for practice
DDNet's Steam listing describes a precision platformer built around difficult community maps and cooperation. Your grappling hook helps you move through the course, while weapons can help rescue teammates. The open-source project lists both single-player and online co-op support.
Choose this when learning a movement system together sounds appealing. Its developers explicitly emphasize coordination and practice, so allow room for repeated attempts. Before inviting a group, agree whether you want a gentle introduction or a difficult map; a free download does not make every course beginner-friendly.
Battle for Wesnoth: fantasy strategy with room to plan
Battle for Wesnoth is an open-source, turn-based strategy game. Its solo campaigns put fantasy forces on hex-based battlefields, while multiplayer offers another way to use those armies. Steam lists online PvP and local shared-screen PvP, as well as a map editor and community-made content.
It fits an evening spent considering positioning and the next move. Start with a solo campaign if you want to learn before arranging a match. For more on how the pace differs from continuous battles, our real-time strategy guide explains the distinction.
Endless Sky: a solo space-trading adventure
Endless Sky combines 2D space trading, exploration and combat. You can earn money carrying cargo or passengers, improve your ship and explore the galaxy. Its developer describes a story you can follow alongside more open-ended travel and trading.
This is the solo option for players who want a continuing journey. The listing identifies it as a free, open-source project with Windows, macOS and Linux support. Steam also lists its High DPI content pack as free. Check the current system requirements before installing, especially the graphics requirements on an older machine.
Helltaker: compact puzzles with a distinctive premise
Helltaker, by vanripper, is a short single-player puzzle adventure built around a demon-romance premise. Its listing says puzzles can be skipped through the menu, giving you an option when one particular problem stops being fun.
The base game is free. The separate Artbook + Pancake Recipe is an optional purchase; its developer says its contents can also be unlocked in the game. The suggestive character presentation matters when choosing something for younger players or a shared screen, so check the store's content description first.
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop: assemble a tactical squad
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is a volunteer fan continuation of Valve's Alien Swarm, made by a team that states it is unaffiliated with Valve. Its top-down shooting supports up to eight-player co-op, online and LAN play, single-player bots and community campaigns.
Choose it when your group wants squad action. LAN support means playing across connected computers; the listing does not advertise split-screen. Check the Windows requirements and the warnings for gore and strong language. Some community missions may include strobe effects.
The developer FAQ says donations can provide cosmetic rewards that do not affect gameplay, while access to game content cannot be sold. That is useful context when comparing a free base game with optional support.
Why checking the current Steam page matters
OpenTTD illustrates how an older free-games list can become misleading. In its March 2026 distribution announcement, the project explained that new Steam users would need to purchase a bundle with Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Existing Steam owners keep their access, and OpenTTD remains available free from the project's website. That makes it a different proposition for someone seeking a new free Steam download.
For any candidate, open the base game's purchase section and check what is actually available. A demo, a temporary free weekend, a soundtrack and a free base game can all lead to different expectations. Review optional content separately, then confirm the modes your group needs. Online co-op, local shared-screen play and LAN support describe different setups.
A quick way to choose your next download
- Choose the session first. Pick solo exploration, turn-based planning, a compact puzzle game or a coordinated group challenge.
- Agree on the setup. Check whether everyone needs their own computer and whether the game supports each person's operating system.
- Read the content notes. Free games can still include mature themes, violence or community content with extra warnings.
- Check the base game and extras separately. Confirm the current offer before installing and decide whether optional support interests you.
If you would prefer something that runs in a browser, our studio's Play Now collection has free demos and individual instructions. Those are Piledrivegames projects, published by the team behind TCG Times; they are a separate browser-play option from the Steam games above.
